The following sonnet is somewhat off-colour, so quit reading here if you're bothered by such things. I've been chanelling, albeit in a clumsy way, Pietro Aretino. Looking for Love on Craigslist. “You’ll never find love looking on the List! These guys, they just can’t ever get the gist Of what a woman wants, but be my guest.” She shrugs, I post. “Ok, Craig, do your best!” The first guy writes, “I’m with 9 inches blessed, Uncut and shaved, a stud, and all the rest.” I grimace. “Well, if all I want’s a tryst?” She laughs. “You really are an optimist! You think a guy like that’s good in the sack?” The rest are all alike. She says, “Let’s pack It in. Depressing, how these guys can’t stack. Up next to us.” But I don’t think the blame Lies with the men, for here we’re all the same: Each one of us is seeking in Craig’s name. At first I thought you were writing fourteeners, until I was the triplets for the last two lines. There's a couple places you might be able to tighten up: These guys, they just can’t ever get the gist" seems like a padded line. In L6, "all the rest" seems like it's added for a rhyme, and is a little bit of a come-down after the specific detail offered before. I get the pun in the last line, but I'm not sure what it means to seek in Craig's name, or how it reflects on both men and women using Craiglist. It's a bit of a tautology: We are the same because we are using the same website. Does this poem really want to be a sonnet? It would actually be fun to list more than one ad from the men, and to interpose more conversations between the women.
