JDate was founded in 1997 by Alon Carmel and Joe Y.Shapira who also started the company MatchNet plc (later renamed to Spark Networks). JDate is a paid dating service which focuses on matching singles of Jewish faith. While users don't have to be Jewish to join, on their profile it asks if they are willing to convert. On the JDate dating service it is free to create a profile, search for matches, view profiles, and read messages. Users do have to purchase a subscription for other features like profile highlighting and if they wish to send messages. A premium membership is also available which allows sending of messages that can be read and replied to by all members, regardless of their subscription status. Membership growth was steady after JDate launched thanks to word of mouth referrals especially in large Jewish communities like the one found in New York city. In 2010 it was reported that JDate had about 750,000 active monthly members with over 93,000 paid subscriptions. In the same year JDate launched a mobile web version of their service which allowed users to get text alerts when they receive any communication from other members. In 2014 JDate launched their first dedicated mobile app for the iPhone (an app for Android phones followed later) and also updated their brand with a new marketing campaign. At this point though JDate was at it's lowest membership levels and revenue since 2006. For this reason and others, JDate's parent company Spark Networks was put up for sale. In 2017 Spark Networks merged with Affinitas GmbH to form Spark Networks SE. The JDate website and dating apps also received a major update including a redesign and new features.
